A suicide attack on an army recruitment centre in northern Afghanistan has killed 37 people. It was the third major assault in the area in less than a month, the deputy governor said.

A Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, claimed responsibility for the attack on behalf of the militant Islamist group. Dozens more were wounded, officials said.

A Reuters witness heard gunfire in the area after the attack but Hamdullah Danishi, the deputy governor of Kunduz province, said the casualties were all caused by a single suicide bomber.

"The death toll includes new recruits, army soldiers and civilians," Danishi told Reuters. A doctor in the Kunduz provincial hospital said 33 bodies had been brought in.

Kunduz (Afghanistan), March 14 (DPA) Thirty-three Afghans were killed Monday when a suicide bomber detonated his explosives inside an army recruiting office in the northern Afghan province of Kunduz, a provincial spokesman said.

Around 40 others were injured in the attack in the centre of the provincial capital, also called Kunduz, said Mahboobullah Sayedi, spokesman for the province's governor.

Most of the victims were volunteers who had queued up near the centre to enrol with the national army, he said.

A DPA reporter said the blast was followed by the sound of gunfire.

The bombing came four days after a suicide bomber killed provincial police Abdul chief Rahman Sayedkhili and four others in the centre of the city. The attack also injured the deputy police chief.
