KABUL, Afghanistan (March 12, 2011) – Afghan and coalition security forces captured a Haqqani (HQN) leader, a HQN network member, and detained one other suspected insurgent during security operations in Shamul district, Khost province, yesterday.

The first HQN leader is responsible for the housing and transportation of foreign fighters, and conducting improvised explosive device (IED) attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

In November 2008, along with a group of Taliban insurgents, he blew up a school in Sayed Kheyl village, Shamul district. He also emplaced an IED on the Sayed Kheyl Bridge in January 2011, but coalition forces were able to remove it before anyone was seriously injured.

The second is a HQ network member in Shamul district. He is responsible for coordinating and conducting attacks against Afghan and Coalition forces.

The security force advanced to the targeted compound where they called for the residents to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. The targeted HQN leader, the HQN network member for Shamul district, and one suspected insurgent were detained after initial questioning at the scene.

North

Afghan and coalition security forces targeted an Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) leader, detaining one suspected insurgent during security operations in Burkah district, Baghlan province, yesterday.

The IMU leader is also a liaison to the Taliban network in Kunduz. He maintains facilitation connections to IMU contacts throughout the region. He also coordinates the movement of insurgents throughout Northern Afghanistan. He, along with other IMU and Taliban leaders, have gathered in the district to plan the upcoming Spring Offensive against Afghan and coalition forces.

The security force advanced to the targeted compound where they called for the residents to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. The suspected insurgent was detained after initial questioning at the scene for involvement in insurgent activity.

South

In Arghandab district, Kandahar province, today, an ISAF patrol discovered one grenade, four warheads, three shotgun rounds, one 8 mm charge, one 82 mm mortar round, 60 .233 rounds and 60 8 mm rounds.

In Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, yesterday, an ISAF patrol discovered 1,716 pounds (780 kilograms) of ammonium nitrate, six feet (two meters) of detonation cord, 49 feet (15 meters) of twin flex cord, one long barrelled weapon, four radio frequency jamming systems, a one gallon (five liters) container of powder and various loose batteries.

East

Afghan and coalition security forces targeted a Hezb-E Islami Khalis (HIK) leader, and killed two individuals who presented a threat to the security force during security operations in Jalalabad district, Nangarhar province, yesterday.

The HIK leader is affiliated with al Qaida, and facilitates improvised explosive device, and suicide bomber attacks. He has recently met with other Taliban leaders to plan attacks on Afghan and Coalition forces and is actively engaging in intimidation attacks against local citizens.

While the security force was conducting a call out, a local national male was observed exiting from a building in an adjacent compound, into the courtyard and was directed to return inside. He complied and returned back outside with an AK-47. Coalition Forces perceived Hostile Intent / Imminent Threat to themselves and shot and killed him.

While conducting tactical questioning at the target building, a local national male exited from a different building near a Joint Security Forces security position. Two Afghan forces were brought forward and gave verbal commands in Pashtun directing the man to return back inside. The man complied. The man then came back outside pointing a pistol at the Joint Security Forces. The security forces perceived this as a Hostile Intent / Imminent Threat to themselves and shot and killed him.
