KABUL, Afghanistan (March 6) – Afghan and coalition forces detained a Hezb-E Islami Gulbuddin commander and two suspected insurgents during an operation in Sabari district, Khost province yesterday.
The commander is involved in command and control, transporting Hezb-E Islami Gulbuddin operatives, improvised explosive devices, weapons, and ammunition for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. According to recent reporting he is also responsible for transporting insurgents, weapons and ammunition within Khost, Paktika and Paktiya.
Intelligence reports led the security force to the targeted compound where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. The Hezb-E Islami Gulbuddin commander identified himself to the security force. Two additional suspected insurgents were detained after initial questioning at the scene.
Meanwhile in eastern Afghanistan 12 Afghan civilians were killed and nine others were wounded in an improvised explosive device attack in Paktika province today. Also today, two additional Afghan civilians were killed in a separate IED attack in the same province.

Afghan and coalition forces targeted a senior Taliban leader yesterday, detaining several suspected insurgents during an operation in Baghlan-e Jadid, Baghlan province.
The senior Taliban leader facilitated night vision devices, mines, and IED components used in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also requested suicide vests and recruited suicide bombers for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
Intelligence reports led the security force to the targeted compound where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. Three suspected insurgents were detained after questioning at the scene for involvement in insurgent activity.
In Imam Sahib district, Kunduz province, Afghan and coalition forces killed a local Taliban commander and one suspected insurgent and detained two additional suspected insurgents.
The Taliban commander was involved in facilitating weapons, suicide bombers, and emplacing IEDs for use in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
Security forces were led to the targeted compound where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. Two suspected insurgents were detained based upon initial questioning at the scene.
South
Two insurgents were killed during a coalition forces security operation in Sangin district, Helmand province, yesterday. Coalition forces observed two insurgents emplacing an improvised explosive device near a compound. After establishing positive identification, coalition forces engaged the enemy position, killing the two insurgents.
In Nad’ Ali district, Helmand province Afghan and coalition forces patrol discovered a weapons cache today. The cache consisted of two AK-47 rifles, six AK-47 magazines full, 15 20-foot (six meters) detonation cord sections, one rocket propelled grenade launcher with two rounds and several improvised explosive device building components. All items were buried three to 24 inches (eight to 61 centimeters) in the ground when discovered.
Coalition forces conducting a clearing operation in Kandahar province discovered a weapons cache yesterday. The cache consisted of one rocket propelled grenade launcher with 15 ammunition rounds, two AK-47 rifles with four magazines and 300 7.62 ammunition rounds.
East
Afghan and coalition forces targeted a Haqqani facilitator, detaining six suspected insurgents during an operation in Terayzai district, Khost province yesterday.
The Haqqani facilitator is involved in coordinating IED attacks and the transfer of explosives within the Terayzai district used against Afghan and coalition forces.
Security forces were led to the targeted compound where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. Six suspected insurgents were detained based upon initial questioning at the scene.
All weapons and IED components have been or will be destroyed by security forces.
