KABUL, Afghanistan (Feb. 19, 2011) — Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces detained a Taliban leader along with one suspected insurgent during an operation in Kandahar City, Kandahar province yesterday.

The targeted militant is an Arghandab district-based Taliban leader responsible for training Taliban insurgents and coordinated suicide attacks, ambushes and improvised explosive device attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

Intelligence reports led the security force to the targeted compound in the city, where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. One suspected insurgent was detained for involvement in insurgent activity after initial questioning at the scene.

The security force received intelligence reports that another Taliban leader was in the area as well and moved to the second compound where the Taliban leader was subsequently detained.

The detained Taliban leader oversaw an assassination cell that operates within the city. He was responsible for transporting IED and conducting assassinations of Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan officials.

Once again, Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. The Taliban leader was detained for involvement in insurgent activity after initial questioning at the scene.

South

Afghan and coalition forces detained a Taliban munitions facilitator during an operation In Nad ‘Ali district, Helmand province, yesterday.

The Taliban munitions facilitator operated in Nawah-ye Barakzai district where he procured and distributed weapons to several Taliban insurgents around the province for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He was closely associated with other Taliban facilitators in the area. He had a supply of machine guns and mortars according to recent reporting.

Intelligence reports led the security force to the targeted compound in the district, where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. The Taliban facilitator identified himself to the security force as the targeted insurgent and was detained. Numerous weapons and ammunition were recovered by the security force.

Also in Nad ‘Ali district, an ISAF patrol discovered a weapons cache consisting of 10 rocket propelled grenade warheads, six RPG propellants, one RPG launcher, one scanner, passports, two grenades, one pistol holster, one pistol magazine, nine AK-47 magazines, two AK-47 butt-stocks, loose ammunition, four chest racks, 300 rifle rounds, one pressure plate and wire.

In Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, during two separate operations, coalition forces received small-arms fire from an unknown number of insurgents. The insurgents entered two separate compounds. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces engaged the enemy positions. Initial reporting indicates several insurgents were killed and no civilian casualties.


East

Afghan and coalition forces detained a Haqqani network weapons and IED facilitator during a security operation in Sabari district, Khost province, yesterday.

The Haqqani network weapons and IED facilitator was responsible for direct fire attacks and IED attacks against Afghan National Army and coalition forces. He also transferred weapons and IED components to the Haqqani network Sabari district leader.

Security forces followed leads to a targeted compound. As the security force arrived, they observed the armed facilitator running away from the compound. The security force followed the facilitator before he finally complied with the security forces request to stop and was detained. An AK-47, chest rack, multiple grenades and ammunition were recovered by the security force from the location which the facilitator attempted to hide the weapons. All recovered weapons have been, or will be destroyed by security forces.
