KABUL, Afghanistan (Feb. 10) – An Afghan National Army and International Security Assistance Force patrol were operating in Bar Kunar district, Kunar province when they received small-arms fire from an unknown number of insurgents today.

After gaining positive identification, the combined patrol returned fire, killing several insurgents. An air weapons team arrived in the area and after the insurgents reengaged the patrol, the ground force and air weapons team returned fire, killing more than 10 more insurgents.

In total, more than 15 insurgents were killed. In other ISAF news throughout Afghanistan:

South

Two civilians were killed in Shamulzai district, Zabul province today after striking an improvised explosive device. Afghan and coalition forces responded to scene and found five additional pressure-plate IEDs in the area.

A combined dismounted patrol operating in Panjaw’i district, Kandahar province today found a weapons cache consisting of 200 AK-47 rounds, seven grenades and various other weapons. A separate combined patrol in the district discovered 14 AK-47 rifles that were wrapped and in like-new condition.

Also in Kandahar today, an Afghan National Army and ISAF patrol discovered 11 rocket-propelled grenade warheads and one AK-47 rifle in Arghandab district. Another patrol in the district found 10 RPGs, 25 fuses, two mortars, two rifles and miscellaneous ammunition rounds.

An ISAF patrol in Deh Rawud district, Uruzgan province found 12 110-pound (50 kilograms) bags of ammonium nitrate today.

In the Zharay district of Kandahar, two separate combined patrols found a cache consisting of 115 RPG warheads, 10 82 mm recoilless rifle rounds, 200 7.62 mm rounds, five fragmentation grenades, three RPG warheads and wire.

In the same province, in Panjwa’i district, two separate combined patrols discovered 10 grenades, six detonators, one 12 gauge cartridge round, one AK-47, four AK-47 magazines, 200 AK-47 rounds, one RPG, one RPG propeller, 22 23 mm rounds, one 105 mm round, one 130 mm round, two RPK machine guns, 150 RPK rounds, one rifle, one illumination round and various loose ammunition.

All confiscated weapons have been or will be destroyed.
