KABUL, Afghanistan (Feb. 5, 2011) – Afghan and coalition units operating in Khugyani district, Nangarhar province discovered a large drug and weapon cache during a dismounted cordon and search patrol today.

The drug cache included 990 pounds (450 kilograms) or heroin and 990 pounds of opium. Among the weapons found were one rocket-propelled grenade, two bags of machine gun rounds, one ammunition belt, four full AK-47 magazines and 12 batteries.

Also discovered were 22 pounds (10 kg) of urea nitrate fertilizer, two jugs of ammonium chloride, four bags of sodium chloride, one jug of hydrogen chloride, 42 gallons (160 liters) of ammonium, 42 gallons of peroxide, 32 feet (10 meters) of copper wire, a pressure cooker and other assorted chemicals.

South

A combined patrol operating in Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province found a weapons cache consisting of 15 rocket-propelled grenade rounds.


East

An Afghan and ISAF patrol in Tagab district, Kapisa province found a weapons cache today that included 160 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, 20 5.56 mm rounds, 15 5.45 mm rounds, seven grenades, a combat vest and other assorted magazines, fuses, radios and ammunition.

Acting on tips, an ISAF security force recovered a weapons cache in Khak-e Jabar district, Kabul province today. The cache consisted of 32 RPG rounds.


West

A weapons cache was turned in to an ISAF post in Chaghcharan district, Ghor province today. The cache consisted of 23 107 mm rockets and 672 14.5 mm rounds.

All weapons and drugs confiscated have been or will be destroyed.
