KABUL, Afghanistan (Feb. 1, 2011) – Afghan and coalition forces detained a Haqqani Network facilitator along with several suspected insurgents during a security operation in Manduzai district, Khost province yesterday. The facilitator operated out of Tanai and Manduzai districts of the province.

Security forces followed leads to a targeted compound, which included a madrassa, where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. The facilitator self-identified himself to the security force and was detained with several other suspected insurgents based on initial questioning at the scene.

South

An Afghan National Army and ISAF dismounted patrol in the Marjah district of Helmand province discovered a weapons cache consisting of six rocket-propelled grenades, one RPG launcher and six propellants. The weapons were confiscated and will be destroyed.


East

Afghan and coalition forces targeted a Taliban leader for Pul-e ‘Alam district, Logar province, detaining two suspected insurgents during a security operation in the province yesterday. The leader is responsible for the facilitation of weapons, improvised explosive device and small-arms fire attacks in the area. After following leads to a targeted location in the district, Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully and conducted a search. Two suspected insurgents were detained based on initial questioning at the scene.

In Laghman province a joint Afghan National Security and ISAF patrol responded to an imminent threat when several insurgents were observed emplacing an IED in Qarghah’i district. Coalition forces requested close air support, which subsequently engaged the emplacement position, killing the insurgents.
