KABUL, Afghanistan – Several insurgents were killed and wounded by International Security Assistance 9768Force in southern Afghanistan over the past 24 hours.

In Helmand province, during separate clearing operations, three ISAF patrols were engaged by insurgents with small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades in Sangin and Kajaki districts. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces returned fire and called for air support. The air weapons team supporting ground forces engaged the enemy position, killing the insurgents.

Coalition forces treated an Afghan woman who was shot by an insurgent in Nahr Surkh district, Helmand province, Jan. 25.

A U.S. Special Forces medic provided immediate aid to the woman after examining her wound.

A medevac helicopter transported the wounded woman, who was escorted by her adult son, to Bastion Role III hospital for further treatment.

Coalition forces met with local villagers after the woman was treated and evacuated to ensure that their concerns were addressed.

This incident occurred two days after two Afghan children were killed and four were wounded by insurgent indirect fire in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province. On that same day a 10-year-old Afghan boy was also shot and killed by insurgents in Qades district, Badghis province.

Afghan and coalition forces detained a Taliban leader along with several suspected insurgents during a security operation in Kandahar province yesterday.

The Taliban leader operated out of Arghandab district where he was responsible for storing and distributing supplies and conducting attacks against coalition forces. He was associated with the Arghandab district Taliban leaders. A recent report indicates he had acquired improvised explosive device components, a rocket propelled grenade launcher and other equipment from a Taliban insurgent for an upcoming attack.

Security forces followed leads to a targeted location in the district, where Afghan and coalition forces conducted a search after securing the compound. While securing the location an armed insurgent threatened the security force resulting in the armed insurgent being killed.

The Taliban leader along with several suspected insurgents was detained after initial questioning at the scene.
Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF also discovered several caches in southern and eastern Afghanistan.

In Helmand, Uruzgan, Kandahar, Paktika and Zabul provinces, Afghan Security forces and ISAF patrols found eight weapons, improvised explosive device-making components and chemicals caches in Marjah, Garm Ser, Tarin Kot, Panjwa’I, Zharay, Kandahr, Mota Khan and Shinkay districts.
