KABUL, Afghanistan (Jan. 22, 2011) – The International Security Assistance Force joins the Ministry of Interior in condemning the insurgent attack that killed two Afghan children and seriously wounded four children and a pregnant woman in eastern Afghanistan today.

In Muqer district, Ghazni province, a joint coalition and Afghan National Security Force patrol was attacked by insurgents with mortar rounds and rocket-propelled grenades. The insurgent fire hit Afghan civilians in the nearby Yarbi Kala village.

After gaining positive identification, the combined patrol returned fire and immediately secured the site, rendering first aid to the injured. The insurgents fled after their rounds hit the village.

“We join the MOI in condemning the murder of these innocent children,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Charles Toplikar, ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. “We hope for a rapid recovery for the wounded and we will continue to work with the Afghan security forces to bring those responsible to justice.”

No coalition or Afghan National Security Forces were injured during the engagement and the injured Afghan woman and children are being treated by coalition medical personnel.
