Farah Province
Afghan and coalition forces targeted a Taliban leader for an improvised explosive device attack cell 9713detaining five suspected insurgents during a joint security operation in Farah province, Jan. 22.

The Taliban leader is responsible for the production and distribution of IEDs to multiple subordinate insurgent groups that emplace IEDs targeting Afghan national security force and coalition members. Additionally, he is involved in intimidation and kidnapping of locals who do not support the Taliban insurgency. The Taliban leader operates primarily in Khak-e Safayd District and is associated with other Taliban leaders in the area.

Security forces followed leads to a targeted location in the district, where Afghan and coalition forces conducted a search after securing the compound. Five suspected insurgents were detained after the compound was secure based on initial questioning at the scene.
Uruzgan Province
An Afghan National Police and ISAF patrol found a weapons cache in Chorah District. The cache consisted of one AK47, three rocket-propelled grenades warheads, four RPG boosters, 120 12.7 mm rounds, 60 14.5 mm rounds and loose ammunition.
Helmand Province
Two insurgents were killed in an accidental blast while emplacing an improvised explosive device in Nawah-ye Barakzai District. Coalition forces responded to the scene of the blast to investigate the incident.

An Afghan National Police patrol discovered a weapons cache in Now Zad District, consisting of 16 82 mm recoilless rifle rounds, 50 mortar fuses and 54 cans of 7.62 mm rounds.


Kapisa Province
An Afghan civilian turned in a large weapons cache to an ISAF forward operating base in Tagab province Jan. 20. The cache consisted of 19 82 mm mortar rounds, 12 81 mm mortar rounds, IED-making chemicals and propellant for rockets.

“The turn-in of the weapons, IED-making components and explosives disrupt insurgent activities and prevent further loss of innocent lives,” said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. “But we ask Afghans to provide us with tips that can lead Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF to safely retrieve this dangerous ordnance”

Initial reports indicate no civilians were injured and no damage was reported during the clearing operations. The weapons, IED making components and chemicals from all the provinces were confiscated and will be destroyed.
Ghazni Province
Afghan and coalition forces targeted the Taliban leader for Muqer District detaining four suspected insurgents during a joint security operation yesterday.

The Taliban leader for Muqer District has direct connections with Taliban leadership and shadow governors in the area. He was also involved with a complex suicide attack that killed four Afghan National Army soldiers and wounded several ANSF personnel in Kabul City, Dec. 19. The Taliban district leader has ordered his group to prepare pressure plate IEDs for future attacks against ANSF personnel according to recent reporting.

Security forces followed leads to a series of buildings in the Muqer District. Afghan forces called out for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search of the compound. After the compound was secure, four suspected insurgents were detained based on initial questioning at the scene and their involvement in insurgent activities.

The International Security Assistance Force joins the Ministry of Interior in condemning the insurgent attack that killed two Afghan children and seriously wounded four children and a pregnant woman in eastern Afghanistan today.

In Muqer District, Ghazni province, a joint coalition and Afghan National Security Force patrol was attacked by insurgents with mortar rounds and rocket-propelled grenades. The insurgent fire hit Afghan civilians in the nearby Yarbi Kala village.

After gaining positive identification, the combined patrol returned fire and immediately secured the site, rendering first aid to the injured. The insurgents fled after their rounds hit the village.

“We join the MOI in condemning the murder of these innocent children,” said U.S. Air Force Col. Charles Toplikar, ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. “We hope for a rapid recovery for the wounded, and we will continue to work with the Afghan security forces to bring those responsible to justice.”

No coalition or Afghan National Security Forces were injured during the engagement and the injured Afghan woman and children are being treated by coalition medical personnel.

Afghan and coalition forces targeted a Taliban leader for attacks on Afghan and coalition forces detaining several suspected insurgents during a security operation yesterday.

In addition to being the Gelan district Taliban leader, the targeted man and his group of insurgents actively attack Afghan National Security Force and coalition force members with improvised explosive devices, direct and indirect fires and target aircraft with heavy machine guns. He is in direct contact with Taliban leaders in the area.

Security forces followed leads to a targeted location in the district, where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit out of the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. The security team detained four suspected insurgents based on initial questioning at the scene.


Khost Province
Afghan and coalition forces detained a Haqqani Network leader who operates in Tanai District along with six suspected insurgents during a security operation in Khost province, Jan. 22.

The Haqqani Network leader conducted improvised explosive device attacks against coalition force convoys along a local route in Tanai. He was in direct contact with other Haqqani Network leaders in the area before his detention. Recent reporting indicates he placed IEDs along various roads throughout the district targeting Afghan National Army and coalition force vehicles. These IEDs reportedly detonated on an ANA patrol vehicle.

Security forces followed leads to a targeted location in Tanai District. Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit out of the buildings peacefully, including a madrassa, before conducting a search and securing the area. The Haqqani Network leader and six suspected insurgents were detained inside the madrassa based on initial questioning at the scene.

Afghan and coalition forces targeted a Haqqani Network facilitator, detaining several combatants and killing numerous armed combatants during an operation in Khost province yesterday.

The Haqqani Network facilitator operates in Sabari District of Khost province where he directly facilitates the movement of improvised explosive devices, mortars and various other weapons across the district.

He has direct ties with other Haqqani Network leaders in the province. The targeted facilitator was in possession of multiple weapons and IEDs that he planned to transport and store at another insurgent’s location according to recent reporting.

Intelligence reports led the security force to the targeted compound in Sabari District. As the joint security force arrived at the compound, armed combatants shot at them with rocket propelled grenades and machine guns. The security force returned fire, resulting in several armed combatants being killed.

The security force encountered numerous armed combatants throughout the compound who engaged the force with RPGs, machine guns and small arms fire. The security force returned fire resulting in several more armed combatants being killed.

While clearing one of the buildings, several women informed the security force there were armed combatants in the building. The security force called out the armed combatants who had been wounded in the initial engagement. A coalition medical technician provided medical care to both of the injured combatants who were evacuated for further medical attention.

After the compound was secure, security forces discovered an Afghan child was killed, as well as two women and a child were wounded during the five-hour-long engagement. The coalition medical technician provided on-scene medical attention for the women and child.

“Afghan and coalition forces take every precaution to ensure the safety and security of the Afghan people during security operations. The insurgents fired on Afghan and coalition forces in the vicinity of civilians, including women and children, without regard to their safety,” said U.S. Col. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. “ISAF’s thoughts and concerns are with the family of the child and we hope the two injured women and child recover quickly.”

After the compound was secure numerous suspected combatants were detained based on initial questioning at the scene and their involvement in insurgent activities. Security forces recovered a machine gun, multiple RPGs and launchers, numerous AK-47s, chest racks, a suicide vest, an IED and ammunition from the scene. A key leader engagement was conducted with local officials by the Afghan National Army to explain the purpose of the mission and allay any concerns of the local villagers.


Zabul Province
A group of Afghan civilians brought a weapons cache to the National Directorate of Security of Qalat District. The cache consisted of 120 pounds (54 kilograms) of homemade explosives, two mines, 30 pounds (27 kg) and 29 fuses.

Afghan and coalition forces detained a Taliban improvised explosive device leader along with one suspected insurgent during a security operation in Zabul province yesterday.

The now-detained Taliban leader and improvised-explosive-device emplacer was responsible for the movement of IED materials and emplacing IEDs specifically targeting coalition vehicles along Highway 1. He operated primarily in Qalat District and has ties with other Taliban in the district.

Highway 1 connects many of southern Afghanistan’s provinces. This operation is one of many over the past two months focusing on IED operations in the Zabul area.

Laghman Province
An ISAF patrol declared an imminent threat on several armed insurgents moving in a historical fighting location in Qarghah’i District and called for air support. After gaining positive identification, the air weapons team engaged the enemy position with anti-armor missiles, killing the insurgents.

Coalition forces targeted the Taliban shadow district governor for Hisarak, Laghman province, killing more than 10 insurgents with two precision air strikes in the province yesterday.

The targeted Taliban shadow district leader conducted attacks against Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan officials and coalition forces. He poses a threat to the security of Afghan officials and coalition forces in Hisarak and Sherzad Districts. According to recent reporting he has acquired improvised explosive device material, machine guns and rockets for future attacks.

Multiple armed insurgents, including the targeted Taliban leader, were identified in a remote mountain area of Hisarak District. After determining there were no civilians present, an air strike was called in to engage the group. The air strike resulted in several insurgents being killed.

Several hours later, multiple armed insurgents were identified in the same location. After determining there were no civilians present, a second air strike was called in to engage the group. The air strike resulted in numerous insurgents being killed.

The International Security Assistance Force is still gathering information to confirm if the targeted individual was one of the insurgents who was killed in the strikes.
Logar Province
An ISAF patrol discovered a weapons cache in Baraki Barak District consisting of three mortar fuses, homemade explosives and several IED-making components.

Afghan and coalition forces detained a Taliban facilitator who operates in both Logar and Paktiya provinces during a security operation in Logar province yesterday.

The Taliban facilitator operated in both Logar’s Pul-e ‘Alam District and Paktiya’s Gardez District where he distributes equipment to Taliban insurgents. He was closely associated with Taliban leaders in the area. Recent reporting indicates he planned to provide another Taliban insurgent with improvised explosive device components for a future attack.

Security forces followed leads to a targeted location in Pul-e ‘Alam District, where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit out of the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. The security team detained the Taliban facilitator based on initial questioning at the scene.
