Afghan soldiers trained by British troops drove the Taliban out of a village during an SAS-style night assault – without a shot being fired.
The stealth attack was so quiet that villagers went to bed under insurgent rule but woke to find their streets being patrolled by the Afghan Army.
The most senior Afghan commander in Helmand, General Sherin Shah, last night revealed how his men waded chest deep through freezing waters to surprise Taliban gunmen who fled for their lives.
He said: “We have the most powerful unit of troops so far and the enemy does not have this, so this is a very good sign for Afghanistan.”
Brigadier James Chiswell, commander of Task Force Helmand, said the *insurgency was now “under significant *pressure”.
