KABUL, Afghanistan (Jan. 15) – Three Afghan civilians were killed and one seriously wounded by an improvised explosive device planted by insurgents in southern Afghanistan today. 9626

In Daykundi province, a civilian vehicle struck the IED in Gizab district. Afghan Security Forces responded to the scene of the blast to assist the wounded and look into the incident. The wounded person was evacuated to a local hospital for treatment.

“By emplacing these harmful IEDs, insurgents show their inhumanity,” said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director.

“These indiscriminate attacks against Afghan National Security Forces and International Security Assistance Force are martyring Afghans.”

Also today, several insurgents were killed and wounded by Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF during separate clearing and security operations in southern Afghanistan.

In Helmand province, an ISAF patrol spotted one insurgent emplacing an IED in Nahr-e Saraj district. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces engaged the enemy position with small arms fire, killing the insurgent.

In the same province, an air weapons team patrolling the area observed two insurgents moving towards a historical fighting location in Lashkar Gah district. After establishing positive identification, the air weapons team engaged the enemy position, killing two insurgents.

Also in Sangin district, an Afghan National Army and ISAF patrol spotted insurgents displaying hostile actions against friendly forces. After gaining positive identification, combined forces engaged the enemy position, killing one insurgent.

During an ISAF patrol, coalition forces observed several insurgents emplacing an IED in a historical placement location in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province. Coalition forces established positive identification and engaged the enemy position with small arms fire, killing one insurgent and dispersing the others.

Also today, Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF discovered several caches during separate clearing operations in southern, western and northern Afghanistan.

In Herat province, an Afghan civilian tip led ISAF to a weapons cache hidden in Shindand district. The cache consisted of one 107 mm rocket, three artillery shells and three unknown ordinances.

In Khost province, an ISAF patrol found a large weapons cache in Tanai district. The cache consisted of 100 propellant sticks, two rockets, explosives, two fragmentation grenades, one anti-personnel mine, five recoilless rifle rounds, 25 fuses, one machine gun, 400 7.62 mm rounds and detonation cord.

An Afghan and ISAF patrol discovered a weapons cache in Bak district, Khost province consisting of three 82 mm recoilless rifle rounds, two 82 mm mortar rounds and one 107 mm rocket booster.

In Dahanahye Ghori district, Baghlan province, an Afghan National Army patrol found a weapons cache consisting of 30 mortar rounds.

Afghan Border Police discovered a large narcotics cache in Spin Boldak district, Kandahar province consisting of 165 pounds (75 kilograms) of heroin and also detained one suspected insurgent.

Initial reports indicate no civilians were injured and no damage was reported during the clearing operations. The weapons, explosives and drugs from all the provinces were confiscated and will be destroyed.
