KABUL, Afghanistan (Jan. 15) – The International Security Assistance Force is investigating a shooting in Helmand province today that led to the death of an Afghan Uniformed Police officer.

According to initial reporting, an Afghan Uniformed Police officer and a U.S. Marine had a dispute while conducting static security operations at a patrol base in Sangin district.

After the dispute, the uniformed police officer was reportedly making threatening statements and handling his weapon carelessly. The Marine reported the behavior to his chain of command and sergeant of the guard.

After departing his post, the uniformed police member returned with his weapon raised and pointed toward the Marine. The Marine responded with escalation of force procedures, including shouting at the individual to put the weapon down.

The individual failed to comply with the instructions and the Marine fired two rounds which resulted in the Afghan Uniformed Police member’s death.

More information will be available at the conclusion of the investigation.
