KABUL, Afghanistan (Jan. 14) – One Afghan civilian was seriously wounded by an improvised explosive device blast planted by insurgents in eastern Afghanistan today.

In Paktiya province the civilian struck an IED while cutting down wood in Jaji district. International Security Assistance Force provided the wounded person with medical care.

Also today, one insurgent was killed as a result of an ISAF clearing operation conducted in southern Afghanistan.

In Sangin district, Helmand province, coalition forces spotted one insurgent emplacing an IED in an historic placement position. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces engaged the enemy position with small arms fire, killing the insurgent.

Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF also discovered two caches during separate clearing operations in southern Afghanistan today.

In Helmand province, an Afghan National Army and ISAF patrol found a weapons cache in Marjah district consisting of four hand grenades, one fuse and 21 60 mm mortar rounds.

In Kandahar province, Afghan National Army and ISAF discovered three weapons caches in Arghandab and Zharay districts. The caches consisted of two anti-tank mines, detonation cord, two radios, one AK-47, 11 rocket-propelled grenades, three RPG fuses, nine RPG warheads, one 82 mm recoilless rifle round, multiple grenade fuses, one chest rack, six full AK-47 magazines, explosives and some loose ammunition.

Initial reports indicate no civilians were injured and no damage was reported during the clearing operations. The weapons and explosives from the two provinces were confiscated and will be destroyed.
