Helmand Province

An Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Force patrol targeted a Taliban leader
during an operation in Nad ‘Ali District, Helmand province yesterday.

The Taliban leader is a prominent improvised explosive device expert and facilitator who also threatens
and disciplines local Afghans who work with ISAF.

After Afghan forces performed a call-out to give the occupants of the target compound a chance to exit
the area peacefully, they began clearing the buildings in the compound. During the search, one woman
and five children were separated and protected.

As the patrol prepared to enter one of the buildings, a man attempted to engage the force with a handgun
and was killed. Another man picked up the discarded handgun and ignored calls in Dari and Pashto to drop
the weapon. He posed a threat to the patrol and was killed.

One man was detained during the operation and taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.



Farah Province

Afghan and coalition forces detained a Taliban leader along with one suspected insurgent during a multi-compound
security operation in Farah province yesterday.

The Taliban leader previously conducted attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in Khak-e Safayd District. Due to
numerous Taliban leadership losses in the district last year from Afghan and coalition force operations, he recently moved to Bakwah District to launch attacks.

A security force followed intelligence reports to a compound in Bakwah District to search for the senior leader.
Afghan forces conducted the callout for all occupants to exit the compound peacefully before conducting a search.
After initial questioning at the scene, the security force detained the Taliban leader along with one other suspected insurgent.

A second security force targeted a separate compound also in Bakwah District. Before the security force could begin to
secure the area, armed insurgents shot at the force. The security force returned fire resulting in one insurgent being killed.
The security force followed a second armed man to the compound where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit
peacefully before the security force cleared and secured the compound.

The security force saw the armed insurgent run into a room where he barricaded himself. After several attempts,
the security force escalated their call-out procedures before entering the room resulting in one armed insurgent being killed.

The security force protected the women and children for the duration of the operation.



Nangarhar Province

Afghan and coalition forces captured a Taliban weapons facilitator for the Chaparhar District during a security operation
in Nangarhar province yesterday.

The detained Taliban weapons facilitator is responsible for supplying weapons and improvised explosive devices for attacks
against coalition forces and government officials in Jalalabad, Chaparhar and Pachir wa Agam Districts.

Recent reporting indicates he and another insurgent had planned to conduct an attack at an Afghan school in
Wardak province. There are no reports that the attack occurred.

Security forces followed leads to the target location in Khugyani District, where Afghan forces called for all occupants
to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. The targeted insurgent self-identified himself to the security
team at which time he was detained. An additional suspected insurgent was also detained after initial questioning at the scene.

No women or children were injured or detained during this operation.



Khost Province

Afghan and coalition forces captured a Taliban facilitator who provided improvised explosive device material
for the Dec. 5 attack on Forward Operating Base Lighting during a security operation in Khost province yesterday.

The detained Taliban facilitator primarily operates in Paktiya province and travels to Kabul, Logar and Khost to provide
Taliban with supplies to carry out attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He is also associated with the Kabul attack network.

Security forces followed leads to the target location in Terayzai District, where Afghan forces called for all occupants
to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. The targeted insurgent and three additional suspected
insurgents were detained after initial questioning at the scene.

No women or children were injured or detained during this operation.
Also.....
Afghan and coalition forces targeted a senior Haqqani Network leader operating in the Terayzai district detaining
several suspected insurgents.

The Haqqani Network leader facilitates the movement of improvised explosive device materials and coordinates
IED emplacement in Terayzai district. He has direct contact with Pakistan-based Haqqani Network leaders.

Security forces followed intelligence reports to a compound in Sabari district to search for the Haqqani
Network leader. Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the compounds peacefully before the security force
cleared and secured the compound. After initial questioning at the scene, the security force detained several suspected insurgents.

The security forces protected women and children and did not fire their weapons.



Ghazni Province

Afghan and coalition forces targeted the Taliban leader for Muqer District detaining one suspected insurgent
during a joint security operation.

The Taliban leader for Muqer District has direct connections with Taliban leadership and shadow governors
in the area. He was also involved with the complex suicide attack in Kabul City Dec. 19 that killed four Afghan
National Army soldiers and wounded several Afghan National Security Forces personnel.

Security forces followed leads to a series of buildings in the Muqer District. Afghan forces called for all occupants
to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search of the compound. One suspected insurgent was detained after initial questioning.
The security forces protected women and children and did not fire their weapons.
Kandahar Province
Afghan and coalition forces captured a Taliban leader who is directly associated with the Dec. 18 suicide
vehicle-borne improvised attack in Kandahar City during a deliberate clearing operation in Kandahar province yesterday.

The detained Taliban leader is responsible for supplying insurgents and planning attacks against Afghan
and coalition forces in the province.

Security forces followed leads to the target compound in Dand District, where Afghan forces called for all
occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. The targeted Taliban leader was detained after initial questioning at the scene.

No women or children were injured or detained during this operation.
