KABUL, Afghanistan (Dec. 21, 2010) – Several suspected insurgents were detained and two caches were discovered by Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces in separate clearing operations in southern Afghanistan over the last 24 hours.

An Afghan Border Police and ISAF patrol found a drugs cache in Spin Boldak district, Kandahar province, consisting of 992 pounds (450 kilograms) of hashish. In the same district, during a separate clearing operation, an Afghan Border Police patrol found a large chemical explosive components and drugs cache consisting of 33,000 pounds (15,000 kg) of ammonium nitrate and approximately 1,322 pounds (600 kg) of hashish. Afghan Border Police detained several suspected insurgents found in possession of the explosives and drugs.

Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF also discovered several caches in the south and north today.

In Kandahar and Kunduz provinces Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF found two large weapons caches in Zharay and Kunduz districts during separate clearing operations. The weapon caches consisted of eight full AK-47 magazines, seven Russian grenades, one 82 mm recoilless rifle round, four rocket-propelled grenades, two chest racks and one artillery grenade.

The weapons, explosives and drugs from all provinces were confiscated and will be destroyed.
