The US Navy's new guided missile destroyer, the USS Jason Dunham, arrived at Port Everglades for its upcoming commissioning ceremony November 13. . The vessel arrived Friday morning from Bath, Maine, where it was built and christened.
"It's a top destroyer, top of the line, the Navy's newest. I'm honored to be on a ship named after a hero," said Lt. JG Allfia Hood.
The 510-foot USS Jason Dunham arrived in Florida on Friday. Corporal Dunham, who grew up in Allegany County, made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq in 2004 at the age of 22 when he threw himself on top of a grenade, saving at least two other Marines from the blast. In 2006, he was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously. Dunham was the first Marine to receive the Medal of Honor in the Iraq war and the first Marine to be so honored since the Vietnam War.
