Thousands of flushed condoms threaten to clog up the Commonwealth Games village's drainage system according to reports.
Commonwealth Games Federation president Mike Fennell has had to endure lengthy grilling over poor attendance, food quality, the state of venues and transportation problems in Delhi but he probably didn't expect condoms to be a Games issue.
Asked whether he could respond to newspaper reports that used condoms were blocking toilets at the athletes' village, Fennell said: "I think that is a very positive story that athletes are being responsible."
He said that the issue had been controversial in the past "but promoting safe sex is a very responsible thing to do."
Games organisers provided 8,000 free condoms in the village, with the Mail Today newspaper reporting that more than 4,000 had already been snapped up by eager athletes.
100,000 condoms were provided for athletes at both the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and the Vancouver Winter Olympics earlier this year.
