Truck driver saves puppy thrown across road

Northland animal inspectors say they are sickened by an act of cruelty in which a puppy was thrown or kicked across a busy road.
SPCA animal inspector Kaye Vezey said a truck driver stopped when he saw the young dog fly across the road in front of his truck in Kerikeri last week.
He picked it up and was confronted by a man who demanded the puppy back in a foreign language. The driver refused to hand it over, instead taking it to a vet for treatment, where it was found to have bad bruising and a broken leg.
Ms Vezey said it was a "sickening" act of cruelty, and appealed for witnesses.
Two Kerikeri lunch bar owners have put up a $500 reward for information leading to a conviction.
The man was of average height, tanned, with brown hair and stubble, and thought to be in his 30s. He wore calf-length blue shorts, a light green T-shirt and pale sneakers. Call the SPCA in Kerikeri with information.
