Failed Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad has been sentenced to life in prison - as he warned "the war with the Muslims has just begun".
Calling himself a Muslim solider, a defiant Shahzad (http://indepth.news.sky.com/InDepth/topic/Faisal_Shahzad) pleaded guilty in June to 10 terrorism and weapons charges.
The 31-year-old former budget analyst from Connecticut and Pakistani immigrant, was arrested two days after his May 1 attempted bombing.
The crude device Shahzad had packed into the back of a 4x4 sputtered, injuring no one.
Sky News' Hannah Thomas-Peter, in New York, said Shahzad asked to make a statement to the Lower Manhattan court before he was sentenced.
"He was calm, he was controlled but he was defiant," said Thomas-Peter.

"Among other things he said is that 'This is my life and I will sacrifice it for Allah.
"How can I be judged by a judge that doesn't understand my country?
"We don't accept your democracy or your freedom.
"The war with Muslims has just begun.
"The defeat of the US is imminent and will happen in the near future.'"
Shahzad's entire operation was botched.
He had to escape on foot because he left the keys to a second getaway car - and those to his flat - inside the vehicle with the bomb.

But officials said the bomb, had it gone off, would have caused carnage in one of New York's busiest areas.
Prosecutors said Shahzad boasted he expected to kill at least 40 people and that he had also planned to set off a second explosion, had he not been caught after the first.
He admitted using internet webcam sites to monitor Times Square and see when and where a blast would be most likely to cause bloodshed.
The car bomb was spotted smoking by a street vendor who alerted police.
Shahzad obtained US citizenship in April 2009, but when asked if he pledged allegiance to the US he said: "I sweared, but I didn't mean it."
The judge urged Shahzad to reflect on his actions and "whether the Koran wants you to kill lots of people".
Shahzad said: "The Koran gives us the right to defend, and that's what I'm doing. I am happy with the deal God has given me."

All terrorists should executed. Whether they're successful in their murders or not; especially if the dimwit says something as this guy has after their case.
Show them that we mean business when caught. Even assisting terrorists should be put to death. Terrorism is the one thing which sums up the evil part of the human spirit and should be hammered out with force.

Perhaps it would be better for all concerned if the 'west' simply got out of all their military adventures in the Islamic world right away, stopped any more immigration and any visitors from the Islamic world dead and put in place a no nonsense repatriation program to rid the 'West' of Muslims within a year or so. Sooner or later It will come to that anyway and it would be very messy.
So perhaps facing the inevitable just getting on with it forthwith would be less of a problem all round. Pity that neither side has been able to control itself very well, but we can't turn the clock back so we should go back to Square One and start again.
