OTTAWA — The Crown is appealing a decision to release on bail one of three men accused of being part of an Ottawa-based terror cell.
Federal prosecutor David McKercher appeared in Superior Court Monday where Oct. 18 was set aside for a review of bail for Misbahuddin Ahmed. The 26-year-old, who worked as an Ottawa Hospital X-ray technologist until his arrest, was released last week on $645,000 cash bond and strict conditions including being confined to the St. Justine, Que., farm owned by his parents-in-law, unless with a surety.
Justice of the peace Louisette Girault's reasons for releasing Ahmed, and the evidence she heard, are covered by a routine publication ban.
Ahmed, Khurram Syed Sher, 28, and Hiva Mohammad Alizadeh, 31, are charged with conspiring with people in Canada, Iran, Afghanistan, Dubai and Pakistan to facilitate terrorism. Ahmed and Alizadeh are also charged with possessing explosives and Alizadeh with financing terrorism.
Investigators with Project Samossa allege a plot to build and detonate bombs in Canada and raise money to help Taliban insurgents in Afghanistan.
