Former Pakistan president Pervez Musharraf has accused Britain and America today of a 'failure of leadership' over pressure to bring troops back from Afghanistan.
He said the Taliban could be defeated, but only if Western troops were not pulled out because political leaders feared unpopularity.
General Musharraf, who led Pakistan for nine years from 1999 after taking power in a military coup and now lives in exile in London, launches his All Pakistan Muslim League political party today.
He denied he faced charges of treason if he returned to his country and said he intended to do so, although he said he risked assassination.
Gen Musharraf told the BBC Radio 4 Today programme: 'There is a failure of leadership.
'Nobody is educating the people who are demanding their soldiers (should) come back that this would be the worst decision. This will be a blunder.
'People here or in the United States think you are fighting someone else's war.
'When the leaders do not tell the masses for political reasons, the mass appeal is to get your soldiers back, but that is not the right think to do.'
Asked if he believed the Taliban could be defeated, he replied: 'Yes indeed. I think they can be defeated.'

Gen Musharraf said he would return to Pakistan: 'There is no charge against me.
'There are other dangers. I will take the risk but I will take the risk at the right time.'
Asked if the risk was assassination, he replied: 'A possibility, yes.'
So the former 'leader' of the epicentre of world terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism talks about failure? What a success he had.
Unfortunately Pakistan is intrinsically corrupt and lawless. The military collude with the Taliban and most civil officials use their position to embezzle funds whilst the people starve.
The UK seems to welcome not only corrupt Pakistani 'politicians' but also their radicalised civilians who are spreading hate throughout the UK.
The UK has learned something from Pakistan though....how to turn a blind eye to extremists and radicals.
It will take decades for Pakistan become a viable democracy even if the corruption stopped tomorrow.
India, next door, despite it's problems is a example of democracy and industriousness with it's developing economy.
Pakistan on the other hand, is falling apart at the seams and gets worse year upon year.

Have to agree with him. The troops are assigned to a conflict where they are committed with their hands tied behind their backs, due to political PR.

Mr Pervez, how can you say such a thing, when there are thousands of people in your country that support the Taliban. Be truthful and admit that your country has done very little to defeat the Taliban or help the American and British forces in Afghanistan. Your country allows the Taliban to move across your borders with none or very little resistance from your own troops. In fact some of your people have blown up fuel tankers for the American and British forces, or don't you read the papers. To tell you the truth Mr Pervez, you are nothing but a money grabbing cretin. Also I would like to ask you, how much is your house worth in London. I myself would not allow you in the UK. However you know how soft the UK government is.

Musharraf was a corrupt leader who siphoned off foreign aid for himself and spent the military budget on supporting terrorist insurgents in India.

yea i know why he killing himself to be Pakistani leader.last 10 years he gulp over three billion pounds from UK and US and what he done with it? probably need another investigation.
Pakistan is a place any dog can be a leader and with some blackmail they can earn millions of pound from west, other wise he can send few suicide bombers to UK.
But I want to ask all those years of his rule what differents he made to ordinary Pakistanies life, nothing he and his wealthy citizen mess up the country and ran to Pakistans Sister country UK.
I surprised to see every Pakistan political parties launched from UK and every pakistan terrorists organisations leaders are in UK.
What I wanted to do is the UN should pass a law similar to genocide or crime against humanity, " the leaders who rule a country who failed to improve the countries economy and its citizens living should be procecuted for neglect and abuse of possition.
so 90% of bogus illiterate ignorant leaders would be jail
