Convicted killer Amanda Knox appeared in court today accused of slandering the police who held her over the murder of a British student.

Knox 23, was jailed for 26 years last December for the brutal sex killing of Meredith Kercher, 21, who was found semi naked and with her throat cut.

During the trial she claimed that she had been 'beaten' by police during questioning about tragic Meredith's murder and prosecutors immediately launched a case against her.

Today Knox was led into court flanked by two prison guards, she looked pale and drawn and was dressed in a white shirt and black trousers.
When asked by the MailOnline how she was doing she smiled and said: 'Fine.'
The closed door hearing lasted less than an hour.
One person inside the hearing told ABC News that Knox's boyish haircut had grown out somewhat, and she was crisply dressed in a white shirt and black pants.
Among those gathered outside the court building in Perugia for the hearing was British film director Michael Winterbottom.
Earlier this year Mr Winterbottom visited Perugia where the murder took place with Mr Firth to see at first hand the locations where the case evolved, including the house where Meredith was murdered and the court.

The British pair also met with the local prosecutor Giuliano Mignini and his planned production comes after it was announced that actress Hayden Panettiere would star as Knox in an American TV film on the case.

Mr Winterbottom explained that Colin Firth will play an investigative journalist reporting the Knox case.

The director said: 'Colin is interested in being involved and we are talking to him. We have had several conversations with him about the type of character he would play.
'The idea we are looking at is a search for what happened but at the heart of the story there is a tragedy for the Kercher family and the other families.

'We have not got a script finalised yet so we don't have any other people in mind for the parts. This case has aroused a great deal of interest with books and TV programmes and it has fuelled discussion.

'People like reading about crime and you are drawn to this story. The central character would be a journalist or writer and Colin and I have talked about this.'

Mr Winterbottom added: 'I have two teenage daughters with one just about to start university so I can imagine how though this must have been on all the families involved.

'I have no opinions on gut or innocence but the case is interesting because of it cross culture - there are lots of different backgrounds with the people involved.'

He added that the film would be 'loosely based on the case' and that shooting would not begin until next year at the earliest, saying: 'The case is a real puzzle with a lot of conflicting evidence.'

Knox's stepfather Chris Mellas, who was at the hearing, said: 'I'm aware of these films being made. I just hope they tell the truth. I haven't had a chance to talk with Amanda about them but she has written to me.

'She is just surprised that people want to make a film about her - she hasn't even heard of Hayden Panettiere. We have no objection to any film so long as it is true.'

Meredith's family have already hit out at the American film while David Marriott, a spokesman for the Knox family, said they had no involvement in the American film.

Knox's lawyer Ms Maria Dell Grosso said: 'The only comment we are making is that it is inopportune to be making a film when the final appeal has not been reached.'

Today's hearing was adjourned until 8th November after judge Claudia Matteini formally recorded that eight police officers were accusing Knox of slandering them.

Ms Dell Grosso added: 'Amanda is very nervous and very down. She is not in a good way. She is trying to keep her spirits up for the appeal hearing next month.'

Knox is serving her sentence in Perugia's Capanne jail along with her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, 25, who was given 25 years for his part in the killing.

If convicted of slander Knox could see a possible further six years added to her sentence and Mignini has also appealed against the 26 year sentence given to her saying he wants to see it changed to life.

In October 2008, a third suspect Ivory Coast drifter Rudy Hermann Guede, was sentenced to 30 years after a fast track trial but six months ago this was reduced to 16 years on appeal.

Meredith from Coulsdon, Surrey, was a Leeds University student in Perugia as part of her degree course and she was murdered in November 2007, just two months after she arrived in Italy.

Earlier this year jailed Mafia supergrass Luciano Aniello claimed that his brother Antonio was really responsible for the killing and that he had hidden on his behalf the murder weapon and a set of keys to the house.

His claims have not been checked by police although they are part of the appeal that has been lodged by Knox's defence team and it will be up to the court to decide whether they should be investigated.
