A student died in a hit-and-run today after being dragged three-quarters of a mile through a street on her birthday.

The 20-year-old Asian woman, thought to be from Singapore, was found in Belsize Park, 150 metres away from a handbag containing her student ID, a wallet and a mobile phone.
Paramedics were unable to save her and she died on the pavement.

Clumps of hair were also found on the stretch of Haverstock Hill, towards Hampstead.

Her body was discovered outside the home of former French rugby international Thomas Castaignede.
Local shop owner Raja Rehman said that police had examined CCTV footage from his store of a black saloon car braking suddenly outside his shop at the time of the death.
He said: 'The car was just beyond Belsize Park Tube. It was an empty road but the car braked suddenly and stopped before carrying on again. It was a black saloon car but you can’t see if there was a person on the car.

'The police watched it and they said that they needed to have a copy. I think they thought it was quite important.'
The area around Belsize Park Tube station was cordoned off this morning after the gruesome find, shortly before 2am.

A resident, who lives near the Royal Free Hospital close to where the woman is believed to have been hit, said: 'My friend spoke to the police officer and he said it was a young girl.

'They thought that she might have been hit by a truck.

'The policeman said that they checked her ID and they realised that it was her birthday today. It's a tragedy.'

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: 'At this early stage, it is believed the woman may have been involved in a collision with a vehicle that did not stop at the scene.'

The woman, who is thought to have worked at the Royal Free Hospital, has yet to be formally identified and police were trying to trace her next of kin today.

Inquiries were continuing to establish the full circumstances of her death.

A London Ambulance Service spokesman said: 'We were called at 1.50am to Haverstock Hill, at the junction with Belsize Grove.

'We sent one single response vehicle but sadly the patient, who was a woman, was dead at the scene.'

Haverstock Hill remained closed to traffic today.
The area is an affluent part of London where stars including Gwyneth Paltrow and Liam Gallagher have homes.

Anyone with information is asked to call the collision investigation unit on 020 8998 5319.
