The Government is to copy eBay (http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/related-4370-ebay-inc.do) by selling millions of pounds of surplus Whitehall equipment to the public through internet auctions.
In the latest innovation to tame the £154 billion deficit, items ranging from computer printers, vehicles and desks to old Army tanks and boats will be sold to the highest bidder.
If the idea is a success, officials are considering using it to sell unique documents and artefacts that would otherwise lie in dusty government storerooms.
It will be money for nothing in some cases because tons of old office kit are routinely thrown away by government departments rather than go through the red tape involved with selling it off. But eBay has proved that everything has a price to someone. The internet auction site is an £8.2 billion worldwide success.
The idea was among 100,000 suggestions from members of the public and people working in the public sector in response to the Chancellor's appeal for ways of cutting out waste and raising money for deficit reduction.
Two other ideas from the Spending Challenge, also suggested by ordinary people, are being implemented.
One is to reduce the number of criminal records bureau checks for junior doctors, who move posts every six months on average and are obliged to go through repeated vetting. Reducing the checks will save up to £1 million a year and cut administrative burdens on the NHS.
Another plan is to abolish the plastic cards containing National Insurance numbers sent to people on their 18th birthday and to new workers arriving from overseas. Replacing the 1.5 million issued each year with paper letters will save £1 million.
“These are the people's ideas,” said Chancellor George Osborne (http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/related-10117-george-osborne.do). “We are directly tapping the experience of those working in the front line of public services instead of assuming that ministers in Whitehall have all the answers.”
There is already a government internet site used to sell off equipment. Run by the Ministry of Defence, it is called edisposals.com and currently advertises such unusual bargains as the naval offshore enforcement vessel MPV Norna, a 72 metre boat with a top speed of 18 knots. The price is not shown.
The UK could do with taking over as a US state,
