Winston Churchill and King in rare colour footage of London during Blitz

Published: 12:01AM BST 06 Sep 2010

Rare archive footage of Sir Winston Churchill reviewing civil defence workers in Hyde Park has been discovered after being hidden from view for more than 70 years.

The colour film – which up until now has only been seen by a handful of people – has been released by Westminster Council's archives team to mark the 70th Anniversary of the beginning of the Blitz.

It was shot by the Head Air Raid Warden and wartime mayor for Marylebone, Alderman Coucher, and shows the wide-spread devastation the German bombings inflicted on the capital.

Entitled 'Pages from St Marylebone's War Diary", it shows Churchill reviewing civil defence workers in Hyde Park while surrounded by thousands of cheering onlookers.
